FCP Play Reading Series

Our play reading series is done with minimal staging so that the actors can focus their attention -- and yours -- on the author's words and the emotions and motivations of the characters in the play. Over the course of the season, our play readings introduce audiences to a range of topics, genres and authors that are outside of the usual community theater fare. It's a chance for our performers to try new material and for audiences to enjoy a play in a low-key setting.

We are especially pleased to be able to feature unpublished works by Maine authors as part of this series. Whenever possible, these readings include a chance to talk about the play with the author following the reading. Hearing the play read by actors, answering audience questions and listening to the discussion helps the playwrights improve the play as they work toward getting it staged and published. For our audience the discussion offers a chance to learn more about the characters and themes from the playwright's perspective.

Play readings are usually free, but we accept donations at the door to support the series.

Best Enemies
by Mike Kimball

May
A dark comedy about two cowboys marooned on a tiny desert island, lone survivors of a sabotaged rodeo cruise. To preserve their sanity, they've invented imaginary geography and instituted laws, but ultimately they go to war over their shared cowboy hat. As they rob each other of food and sleep, their tiny, carefully constructed universe begins to unravel.
